RIP Jimmy Buffett

"I can't change the direction of the wind,
but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination."

“Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,” a statement released on his social page reads. “He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many,” the statement continued. No cause of death was released. - CNN

There wasn't much warning about his heath. Roughly 11 months ago, Jimmy and his band rescheduled and canceled shows, citing a brief hospital stay and doctor's orders to rest, recuperate, and heal for the rest of the year. He made a few surprise visits at events during that time, but nothing strenuous or grand.

Jimmy was diagnosed with skin cancer four years ago, and the disease progressed to lymphoma. This was supposedly the 76-year-old's cause of death. This hasn't been confirmed, however.

The world mourns the loss. Jimmy Buffett was more than an icon in the music industry - he was the man behind the quirky Parrot Head movement, which pushed beyond country music to unapologetically roll around on a beach. He promoted a lifestyle that people could identify with or longed for. He was heavy into environmental movements. He raised funds for programs. He was a voice for so many causes. He loved everything nautical. He once said he always wanted to be "Jacques Cousteau with a Southern accent".

Elton John and Beach Boys' Brian Wilson lead celebrity tribute this afternoon. I'm expecting more of these poignant moments in days to come.

I adore the positive impact the man had on the world. I encourage you to contribute to his causes (Singing for Change or Save the Manatee Club, for starters). This work doesn't stop now that he's sitting on some heavenly beach and sipping wine with Jacques Cousteau.
