Marvin the Crawdad

Meet Marvin. He was a happy lad yesterday. Only the day prior, he was swimming around a large tank with his kith and kin. And then swoop! he was taken from those waters to be put in a bag and then a box.

Marvin is a crawdad. This freshwater crustacean looks like a mini lobster. He's not. And he has a variety of names depending upon the region in the US. They are also known as crawfish, craydids, crawdaddies, crawdads, freshwater lobsters, mountain lobsters, rock lobsters, mudbugs, baybugs or yabbies.

As I've said before, I kept one as a pet.

Our friend Marvin here is the epitome of cool. Behold him as he struts his stuff on top of a box holding his kin. How proudly he sits! So calm!

But he's pink rather than grey. This can only mean one thing: Marvin has been cooked.

I see by your expression that this comes as a shock to you. Sorry Marvin. It's difficult to accept. Rest assured, gentle friend, that you were tasty.

We have at least a dozen more in that container. It's the aftermath of Elliot's crawdad boil yesterday.

We now have too much leftover red beans and rice. And a bag of stuff from the water poor Marvin was boiled in. To top it off, I am making a large pot of paprikash for Father's Day. I didn't expect Jeff to bring so much food home!

Ugh.
