Book Snippet - Auntie's Mill




Long, dried out strips of fly paper hung in every corner, in front of every window, and even formed a curtain in the doorway. These strips monotonously tapped against the closed door, stirred from some unidentifiable breeze. Emma stared at the imprisoned husks of long-dead insects and worried about her own fate.

The bugs looked odd, however. The girl slid off the chair and approached the door. To her horror, the dead things were tiny fairies - mummified or partially skeletal bodies - snared by glue.

SNAP!  The door flew open without warning, causing Emma to topple backwards. She landed hard enough to kick up the carpet dust. But this was the least of her worries. No light fell beyond the doorway. Something large loomed just inside the dark room.

"Come inside, dear."

It was a command rather than a polite invitation...
